Today, Lady Vaeol and Remaue gave us a lesson in the Lashunta Tongue, which some of us had long wanted. For the most part, it went well, though many men didn’t take it seriously. Instead, they were more interested in getting our teachers’ chests bouncing. For myself, having learned some languages in my adventures, Lashunta is an airy, rolling language. Its musicality reminds me of Elvish, though with a stronger rhythm, and soft sounds. I learned some useful phrases, such as ‘samaea’, which means thanks, and ‘velya’, which is please. Things swiftly get more complicated, however. While the Lashunta have numbers, their words get confusing when it comes to showing number, in terms of one or many of a thing. There seems no difference between ‘I’ or ‘we’, though their verbs do odd things with inclusion and exclusion, such as ‘we including you’ against ‘we but not you’. Also, my best guess is they have as many five or six genders: a masculine, feminine, and then maybe a common, animal, object, and lastly something like spirit or idea, if I’ve kept it straight.

Curiously, the Lashunta differentiate between ‘damae’, which is the female gender, ‘rie’, which is a wife or grown woman, and ‘lae’, which I think means maiden, since Vaeol and Remaue use that word to refer to themselves. Other words are ‘moare’, ‘moara’, or ‘moaras’, depending on whether the gender is feminine, common (which often gets used for plurals), and masculine, which means warrior. ‘Mae’ is mother, while ‘dias’...

Along with the wine (again much appreciated) and food (interesting but mostly tolerable), we got to see our erstwhile captors in a freer light. Most had stripped to their loinclothes, and some women had forgone their breast-halters (though Vaeol and Remaue had not), which put the men in a lively mood. Whatever one might say of these Lashunta’s buglike head-growths, or of the men’s apelike bodyshape, their Damaya women are full comely, and nothing in their scanty dress hints any shame. This was further, almost painfully, driven home, when a music band began an odd but rhythmic tune, and a dance started. My men first gaped, and then almost fell over themselves asking to be taught the steps, though I doubt, given the Lashunta knack for mind-reading, their true interest was lost. I did my best to keep a sharp eye, lest overeagerness lead to insult. Based on my assessment of the Damaya in the field, I doubt they would cower or suffer any unwanted attention (which I foresaw ending in a well-aimed knee or elbow, and lucky that none were carrying daggers). Also, for better or worse, the Korasha-men oversaw my men’s friendliness with more than comfortable mind. From what I had seen, the men and women mostly served in separate troops - with the few exceptions I have noted - and have limited and dutiful congress while afield. Yet here on this festive eve a new tension emerged, and I bewared my men might have rivals for the Damaya’s affections. Indeed, the squat Korasha joined...

Lashunta Proverb
~Keiami haenura o ahyela:~
Literal Translation: “Taste the blossom if/when canny.”
Analogs:
“Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.”
“Carpe Diem.”

The imperative verb ~keiami~ - taste - may seem like an odd choice, since one might more naturally smell blossoms. However, under Lashunta humor’s love for sous-entendres, ~haenu~ - ‘blossom/flower’ when it appears in the feminine gender as ~haene~, is a common polite reference for that most feminine of organs. The related phrase ~keiamassi haenere~ - tasting the female blossom, is a reference to a moderately explicit act of submission under the Lashunta Damaya Matriarchy. Thus the proverb alludes not only to a sexual innuendo, but also a suggestion of the value of sacrificing one’s ego.

Keiami - direct imperative of ~keiamassi~: to taste.
Haenura - accusative of ~haenu~ (animal): flower; blossom
O: secondary clause-marker
Ahyela - 3rd-person common, dependent mood of ~ahassi~: to be possible/canny

The most impressive building upon the Ofu stands on the northern cliff, where it overlooms the hollow where the river (named the Yaro) undercuts below. It features a lighthouse at its rear, and also a high dome hollowed with shafts of crystalline glass almost from top to bottom, a wealth in glasswork that would beggar even the Keleshite Empress. When we came inside, we saw the dome even had an oculus open to the cloudy sky. Straight under the open shaft stood an idol rising thirty feet from a pedestal already twenty feet high, of a woman wrought or plated in gold, and wearing a crescentlike crown set with glittering red gems. Soon as I saw, I knew this was the Lashunta’s main war-deity. Though a saree-like shroud in crimson and cloth-of-gold wrapped her shoulder, waist, and legs, a sunburst-like breastplate like a golden mirror hung on her bosom, and her hand held a spear, which looked at least silver-gilded, if not pure. Even under cloudlight she shone and glittered, and the men gaped not only for her beauty, for for the uncountable wealth that drapes this idol.

While I stood before a small altar and stared upward, a priestess came forth. She consented to undergo Lady Vaeol’s speech-spell and welcomed us. She explained the temple is dedicated to the Burning Mother, who is the light against darkness and defender of worlds. She went onward to tell that the city of Son was founded here, on this very spot when a Warrior-Queen named Eh-yeh-shay fled here and received...

The PCs are officially finished and are in the hands of (some of) the players! Nearly messed up the backdrops because I had them printed way too small, but putting down a cardboard circle and airbrushing everything around it turned out potentially even better than just having the picture fill the entire background.

The steward, or wizard, as I foretook him as being, and two guards brought me again to the upper town’s height, where on another side of the great tree’s square stood a hall between what looked like two temples. Inside we went, where I saw the buildings were much more open between themselves than I had guessed from outside. Through a gallery connecting to the temple on the left came a set of tree-limbs, broad and girthy as tree-trunks in their own right. Yet, but for a few odd leaves and blossoms along the windows, it looked almost dead.

I wondered on this ancient, almost-dead tree, and why it should have a temple built around it, when I was led to the hall’s other side and up a stair, to a floor just under its limbs. Here waited about a dozen Lashunta, both men and women, and all dressed samely with golden beads upon their brows, which remind me of the mystics I have met in Vudra, who mark a spot on their foreheads as token. All bowed politely, and my guide informed me that they were my examiners. He then bade me lie on a mat in their midst.

What happened next I cannot describe. My examiners began a throaty, humming chant. I felt a weird throb in my head, and when I startled, the guide again bade me relax. Then I seemingly drifted to sleep, though whether I was dreaming or living out some crazed fantasy I cannot tell…

...I relived nearly every fight and battle I have ever undergone, from fighting Orc-hordes on the Numerian plains to back-lane knife-fights...
